Case Study – Advancing sustainable and resilient vaccine manufacturing: CSL Seqirus Tullamarine officially opens In December 2025, CSL celebrated an important milestone with the official opening of its new state-of-the-art, Vaccine and Antivenom Manufacturing Facility in Tullamarine, Melbourne. The site received its 5-Star Green Star rating certification in building design and construction from the Green Building Council of Australia in May 2026, reflecting its adherence to recognised sustainability standards in building design, construction and performance. This achievement was more than five years in the making, driven by passion, expertise and a shared commitment to protecting public health. Beyond what has been achieved, CSL is most proud of how it was achieved. Across all functions and global time zones, hundreds of colleagues from across the enterprise contributed to bringing Tullamarine online. Modelled on CSL’s Holly Springs manufacturing facility, this state-of-the-art site will expand global access to CSL’s cell-based seasonal flu vaccines, including FLUCELVAX® and aTIVc, with enough capacity to supply Australia as well as other regions, including Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. Underpinned by a formal Biosecurity deed, the Tullamarine facility supports the Company’s long-term partnership with the Australian Government to protect Australia’s health by providing sovereign manufacturing capability and supply of pandemic influenza vaccines, antivenoms and the human Q fever vaccine. In the event of an influenza pandemic, the site and associated network will have the capability to rapidly produce more than 150 million vaccines in the first wave of manufacturing, to help protect Australia and other nations. Case Study – Advancing product sustainability: Life Cycle approach to understanding impact This year, CSL expanded the use of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) across key parts of the product portfolio, including immunoglobulins, vaccines and iron products. An LCA evaluates the environmental impacts of a product across its entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction through production, distribution, patient use and end-of-life, providing a comprehensive view of products’ environmental impacts. The assessments followed recognised methodologies, including the recently developed ‘Publicly Available Specification – Product category rules for environmental lifecycle assessments’ (PAS 2090)1 standard for pharmaceutical products and approaches aligned with requirements from the French Directorate General for Enterprise (DGE). This ensured that results meet both emerging regulatory expectations and customer needs in key markets. The completion of LCAs across CSL’s various products have enabled CSL to identify and compare areas of high impact across different products, and their individual manufacturing processes. Differences in manufacturing processes, for example FLUAD® (egg-based) and FLUCELVAX® (cell-based), can have varying unseen environmental impacts. Through the LCA process, CSL can see where different products and their manufacturing process have the most impact. Areas of high impacts are further assessed to see if any reductions can be implemented. Efforts aligned to CSL’s Healthier Environments areas of focus (energy, water and waste) help future, measurable reductions in product LCAs over time. Delivering these assessments requires close collaboration across the Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Engineering, EHS, Sustainability and Commercial teams, among other functions, fostering a shared understanding of how environmental data supports both business and patient outcomes. The LCAs conducted by CSL represent important steps in building internal capability and advancing a more consistent and scalable approach to product-level environmental assessments, supporting CSL’s broader objective of delivering for patients today, while contributing to a healthier world tomorrow. 1.
